Wood Frame Hot Tubs

Most spas (nearly all in fact, including all the major brands regardless of price) have wood frames, usually just plain old 2 x 4''s, though the base is usually pressure treated.  Wood presents a lot of potential problems, none of which you will see or experience when you first receive your spa.  The problems will most likely appear once your warranty expires.

  1. First, the wooden 2 x 4''s are stapled together.  We've seen more than a few such spas with gaps between various wooden pieces.  And that frame is used (along the full foam) to support the spa shell (full of water weighing 1 - 2 tons).
  2. Wood changes dimensions with changing humidity and temperature.  Almost all spas are outside, where these change the most.  One of the more common reasons for a cracked shell is the wood frame.
  3. And worst of all, we have plenty of carpenter ants and termites here in Texas.  We've seen and had many clients tell us of spas being eaten from the inside out by these pests.

Neither Bullfrog Spas nor Clearwater Spas use wood in making their spas.  This is one of many reasons we chose to represent them.
